| Artist Statement |
As an artist, there are many things I find most interesting in photographing the human figure. The beauty of the earthly bodies God has temporarily clothed us in inspires in me a sense of awe and almost sacred reverence. Photography for me is my way of appreciating that beauty, and of saying thank you for the gift of creation and my creative gifts. | ||||||||||||||||

Art is not done in a vacuum however, and so living in a fairly conservative community, I am aware of the many other more negative attitudes out there towards our bodies generally, and more specifically: nudity in art. Much depends I find on perception, and the psychological baggage which the viewer brings to looking at the subject. For many perhaps, nudity can only be seen as intended for sexual arousal and pornographic. So there is light and darkness, truth and untruth, other's fears and risk of being misperceived and misjudged involved in choosing to work in this area. | |||||||||||||||||

I am often humbled by the quality of relationship that exists between myself and the model. It is an experience of vulnerability and trust...and mutual respect. Something rare...yet so ordinary...something sacred yet simple and mundane...a quality not often found in our short lives even with our families and those we are supposed to be close to. And I must confess with St. Paul that my perception is limited, and I see as through a darken glass. However, I believe that the calling of an artist is to honesty, and understanding one's self and one's relationship to others, and reality and even God on an ever deeper level. ....and to answering the question of what is the truth about the external world, and what it means to be human, and to be one's self in particular. I agree with Dr. Scott Peck also that I must continually revise my map of reality if I am to grow as a person...and I believe my photography of the human figure has helped in the revision process . | |||||||||||||||||
